Weather station
Hardware
The weather station is a Weatherflow Tempest station, which is a new concept in weather stations. It consists of one unit outside, the unit has no moving parts but has sensors to detect temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction and rainfall (detected by a heptatic sensor which detects rainfall on it's surface. It also detects lightning strikes within 40 km of the station. The data is transferred to the computer via wifi.Data is also sent to the Weatherflow data centre and then compared with data from other units, this data is then used to give (hopefully) more accurate, more localised forecasts
Software
Installed on the computer I have a program called Weather Display, a very popular weather station software package. Weather display takes the basic data from the weather station and displays it on the computer, it also performs calculations from that data to display other parameters such as dew point, heat index. This data is also stored and then historic details and comparisons can be viewed graphically
Weather display can also be set up to create files which can then be uploaded to the internet and displayed on a website, which is what is happening here. These files can be set to update at various time intervals some every few seconds therefore giving an up to date live picture to the website visitor of the conditions here in my garden in Farnham
Once the data is uploaded to the internet obviously I need a website to display it on, I need a web host that will allow the use of PHP5 scripts and MySql databases. I then use templates which have been created by people who know much more about coding etc than I will ever know, the ones here are from meteotemplate and are freely available, other templates are available and I also use the Saratoga templates by Ken True. These templates allow the importing of much more data such as forecasts and weather from official sources.
